The island of San Giulio sits in the centre of the lake — a small, dreamlike piece of land with a Romanesque basilica dating to the 4th century and a Benedictine monastery that still functions today. From the village of Orta, you can reach it by boat in five minutes. It's the kind of view you have from your window that never becomes ordinary.

Italy's most intimate lake, before the crowds find it
Lake Orta is smaller, quieter and less known than its famous neighbours, and that is precisely the point. Orta San Giulio is a medieval village on the eastern shore, with an island in the centre of the lake that appears out of the mist like something from a different century. The Sacro Monte above the village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Milan's Malpensa airport is 44 kilometres away.
Alpine access from a lakeside village
The Valsesia valley and the ski resort of Alagna Valsesia, one of Piemonte's finest off-piste destinations, are under an hour away. Lake Maggiore is 25 kilometres east. The Sacro Monte trails offer year-round walking through chestnut and oak woodland with views over the lake and the Alps. For those who want lake life with genuine mountain access, Orta San Giulio sits in a geography that is difficult to improve on. Property ranges from €1,800 to €3,500/m².
A village that operates at human scale
The weekly market has run every Wednesday since 1228. The boat to Isola San Giulio takes five minutes and costs almost nothing. The restaurants are few enough that you get to know which ones to trust. Orta San Giulio is a place where the scale of daily life — the walk to the piazza, the morning coffee, the evening on the water — adds up to something that larger, better-known destinations rarely manage to replicate.
