The Valle d'Itria is the landscape that defines this part of Puglia: a gentle plateau of limestone and red soil, covered in olive and almond trees, with the characteristic white villages of Locorotondo, Cisternino and Martina Franca punctuating the horizon. The trulli — built without mortar, in a construction technique so unusual that they warranted UNESCO protection — are scattered across the countryside in a way that never quite loses its power to surprise, however many times you see them.

The Valle d'Itria, one of southern Italy's finest territories
Alberobello is the home of the trullo and the gateway to the Valle d'Itria — a landscape of limestone plateau, red soil, ancient olive trees and the white villages of Locorotondo, Cisternino and Martina Franca. It was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 1996, not as a museum piece but as a living territory. The trulli are still here, the farmers are still working the land, and the food is still produced nearby.
Remarkable value in a market that is moving
Puglia's property market has been rising consistently, but Alberobello and the wider Valle d'Itria still offer entry points that are exceptional by Italian standards: trulli requiring renovation from €60–80k, restored properties with land from €150k upward, masserie with olive groves at prices that would be impossible in Tuscany or Liguria. Two international airports, Bari around an hour, Brindisi 45 minutes, keep the access practical.
Outdoor life built around the land
Cycling between masserie on empty country roads, horse riding through olive groves that have been producing since the Middle Ages, long walks through a landscape that changes with the light in a way you never quite predict. The Adriatic coast is 40 minutes east, the Ionian 50 minutes south. Orecchiette, burrata, local wine , the food here is produced close enough that you can trace most of it to where it came from.
