THE GOOD PLACE TO LIVe

good places — Lagui

Orta San Giulio is a medieval village on the eastern shore of Lake Orta — a small, intimate lake in Piemonte that most visitors to the Italian lakes never reach. That is, increasingly, the point. Lake Orta has the beauty of its famous neighbours without the crowds, the prices or the noise. The village is one of the most beautiful in Italy, the lake is clean and swimmable, and Milan's Malpensa airport is 44 kilometres away.

Verbania sits on the western shore of Lake Maggiore at its widest point, looking across to the Borromean Islands — three extraordinary garden islands that are among the most visited sites in northern Italy. As the lake's largest town on the Piedmontese shore, it offers a genuine urban infrastructure alongside one of the finest natural settings in the Alps. The botanical gardens of Villa Taranto alone draw visitors from across the world. For those who live here, they're just down the road.
