Porto Rafael

The Mediterranean Dream of a Spanish Count

On the northern coast of Sardinia, facing the islands of the La Maddalena archipelago, lies one of the Mediterranean’s most enchanting and refined corners: Porto Rafael. This small, magical enclave was born from the visionary dream of a Spanish aristocrat who fell in love with beauty and freedom — Rafael Neville, Count of Berlanga de Duero.

Thus, Porto Rafael was born: a small village built stone by stone, in a luminous and understated Mediterranean style, where every house blends with the contours of the land and its surrounding vegetation. Neville’s philosophy was clear, to build a refuge for the soul, a space for art, friendship, and contemplation.

A Dream Come True

In the early 1960s, Rafael Neville arrived on the Gallura coast and recognized, in those granite rocks shaped by the wind and sea, the landscape he had once seen in a dream. He decided to create a place unlike any other, far from mass tourism, where nature and architecture would live in perfect harmony.

Porto Rafael Today

Today, Porto Rafael remains a symbol of discreet elegance and Mediterranean harmony. The spirit of Count Neville still lives on — the village has retained its original charm, protected by strict planning regulations and by a residents’ consortium that safeguards its aesthetic, tranquility, and natural surroundings.

Its narrow streets, draped with bougainvillea and jasmine, lead to small art galleries, cafés, and private villas. In summer, the piazzetta comes alive with concerts, exhibitions, and cultural gatherings, remaining faithful to the bohemian and cosmopolitan soul that shaped it.
